Biographical:

John Morrow was born in Dungannon, Northern Ireland, in 1959. He received the B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Queen’s University Belfast (QUB), Belfast, U.K., in 1982 and 1987, respectively. In 1987 hHe joined The Queen’s University of Belfast as a lecturer in 1987 and was subsequently appointed as the Professor of Electrical Engineering in 2011. His teaching, research and consulting interests are in electric power systems, power system instrumentation, embedded generation control and protection. Throughout his career he has worked closely with industrial and utility partners and was the recipient of a Royal Society Industrial Fellowship with Caterpillar Inc.. He has in excess of 1460 scientific publications and two US patents to his name and he is a member of the IET the IEEE and the IEEE Excitation Systems Subcommittee.
 

 

Talk:
In this talk Professor Morrow will discuss the Irish ration coming from wind providing approximately 20% of our electrical energy. It is estimated that to reach our target of 40% energy from renewables, that we will need to facilitate instantaneous penetrations as high as 75%. This leads to particular system operational difficulties such as reserve provision and system inertia. To alleviate these difficulties new tools are required by the system operator such as the 10MW (5 MWh) battery installed in December 2015 for grid support.
