Inauguration of the development project of the surgical operations, intensive care and sterilization unit at the Oncology Center at a cost of 105 million pounds

President of Mansoura University:

  • The surgical operations development project is a step forward and a distinguished addition to the university's medical system in the field of cancer treatment and surgeries.
  • Six surgical operating rooms designed with the latest surgical capsule systems in the world enter medical service with the opening of the project.

Prof. Cherif Youssef Khater, President of Mansoura University, inaugurated on September 9, 2024, the development project of the surgical operations unit at the Oncology Center, which includes: surgical operations - intensive care - sterilization, on a total area of 2,000 square meters, at a cost of 105 million pounds, funded by the state's general budget, and with the support of civil society from donors from charitable people, businessmen, and charitable associations.

The opening was attended by Prof. Mohamed Abdel Azim, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, Prof.Tarek Ghalwash, Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research, Prof.Ashraf Shoma, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of University Hospitals and Specialized Medical Centers, Prof. Nisreen Salah Omar and Mr. Magdy El Amir Members of the Parliament, Prof. Al-Shaarawy Kamal, Executive Director of University Hospitals and Specialized Medical Centers, Prof. Walid El-Nahhas, Director of the Oncology Center, Prof. Adel Fathy, Prof. Tawfek El-Khodary, Deputy Directors of the Center, Heads of Departments and Faculty Members of the Faculty of Medicine and the Oncology Center.

Prof. Cherif Youssef Khater said that Mansoura University is doing its best to provide all means to develop medical services to maintain its leadership in providing distinguished and integrated medical services, as a pioneer of medicine in Egypt, within the framework of the directives of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, to care for the health of citizens, manage patients, and provide services at the highest level that meet their needs, and achieve the goals of the National Strategy for Higher Education and Scientific Research in University Hospitals; to improve the quality of health services provided to citizens, and achieve the state's vision for sustainable development 2030. The university president pointed out that the project aims to raise the efficiency and develop the surgical operations unit, intensive care and sterilization at the Oncology Center was implemented according to the latest international technologies, and in accordance with infection control instructions and international quality standards, in order to provide an advanced infrastructure that supports the center's surgical services provided to cancer patients, within the system of eliminating waiting lists.

Prof. Ashraf Shoma added that what has been accomplished is a breakthrough in the medical services of the Oncology Center, noting that the center has been allocated funding from the state to pay for the treatment of cancer patients, exceeding 500 million pounds annually, in addition to the support of community institutions due to the excellence of the medical services provided by the center to treat cancer patients.

Prof. Al-Shaarawy Kamal pointed out the university administration's unprecedented support for the medical sector, and there are many medical projects that will provide a quantum leap in serving patients in Dakahlia and the Delta Governorates, which will work to increase the capacity, reduce crowd in hospitals, and play their role in eliminating waiting lists, explaining that the hospital sector plays an important role in providing specialized and diverse medical services at the highest level, as the Oncology Center is one of the distinguished places that provides integrated medical services, and he also pointed to the civil society represented in participating with donations in developing the center, which reflects the integration between society organizations and the center's administration.

Prof. Walid Al-Nahhas explained that the development of the operating unit is the result of great efforts by the previous and current center administration during the years of project completion, which began in 2019, and that the center's management is working hard to develop all units and departments with the latest technological equipment to provide the best medical and therapeutic services to patients from Dakahlia and the Delta Governorates.

The development project of the surgical unit at the Oncology Center was implemented in two phases; the first phase included developing the intensive care unit, operating 6 intensive care rooms, and increasing the capacity from 14 beds to a total of 22 state- the-art intensive care beds, equipped with ventilators, patient monitoring screens, central stations, pumps, electric shock devices, a kidney dialysis machine and a dialysis station for intensive care patients, and allocating a room with negative pressure ventilation to isolate patients whose health condition requires it. It also included a sterilization unit equipped with the latest sterilization devices dedicated to sterilizing machines, and furniture for all departments of the medical centers in the center. While the second phase included updating and renovating the surgical unit, updating the architectural design, and adding an operating room with a full donation from the Friends of Oncology Center Patients Association, bringing the total number to 6 operating rooms designed with a surgical capsule system; It consists of rooms with sealed walls and floors that are antibacterial - designed entirely from the outside according to the latest international technologies, and equipped with ways for air to enter and exit in ways that prevent the spread of bacterial infection, and attached to it are patient preparation rooms, a clean corridor, stores, service rooms, with their contents, and recovery rooms.
